U2: MUSICIAN AND MESSENGER

Rock stars and political activist is not a strange combination. For decades, rock stars have been giving their view in how the world should be worked. Since the era of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Rolling Stones, until Coldplay today, activism is one big factor in songs and concerts.

Talk about activism in music, there’s more ideal icon than U2. Originated from Ireland, the band has been supporting efforts of Amnesty International, Greenpeace, and Chernobyl Children’s Project. The fame of the band has been used for pressuring rich countries to reduce the debt burdening developing countries and to fight again AIDS. U2 was the first big band ever played in Sarajevo after the Bosnian war. They also put effort to give musical instruments to artists in New Orleans after the Katrina, and have aggressively support the Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Their latest tour, as support for the most recent album “No Line on the Horizon” was sold out in just two days and it shows how far the band deliver the message has.

U2 has proved that songs can be a good way to deliver message. They use fame as a form to distribute their views, and thus giving the world a mean to change.
