The World Wide Web has reformed every aspect of the world from social interaction to business to music. A couple of years ago Indie bands played in garages, family functions, and cafes. They cut CDs and sent them to music giants in the hope they will be noticed.

The Internet and MP3s has brought about many changes in the affluence of independent music artists. The distribution system and marketing opportunities have changed. New media formats and many individual websites popped up and the reach of independent music became world wide. Gone were city boundaries or traveling on the road to spread awareness in the music industry and beyond. With the click of a mouse, popularity would dramatically increase.

However it is not all about success after the initial boom, several music sites and bands failed anyway. What every band with a dream of platinum albums and a plethora of weath must do is:

-Complete a study of their options.
-Create a marketing plan and constantly develop it and stick to it.
-When in doubt of their next move, talk to music contacts and mentors within the music industry.

Marketing online is all about promoting creatively:

-Be realistic and don’t expect profits overnight. You need to popularize your independent music by possibly sending it out as a freebie. Place MP3s and videos on your site. When someone downloads a song and listens to it, they hopefully will play it over and over. This increases the likelihood of them wanting to hear your next song.

-Make sure you music is easily identified as yours no matter where it is posted.

-Categorize your music into the correct genre.

-Take advantage of popular music sites to distribute your music. People who love music scour these sites.

-Make your band’s mark in stone. Get a website, purchase a domain name, use a reliable host and learn how to use SEO it so that it ranks high in the search engines. Educate yourself on the construction and proper use of a website. The old saying, “if you build it, they will come,” does not apply here.

-Make your site interactive. You can do this by posting a blog, reviewing other music or introducing the band members. Make the site appealing so that guests are persuaded to look through and listen to your music.

-Explore other blogs and music forums to meet music contacts and increase your own popularity.

-Last is developing ways to generate funds, profits! Selling your music and merchandise is just the beginning. The music industry on the web is full of all kinds of ways to make some dough so be creative!

It seems that every little boy has dreams of starting their own rock band when they reach junior high school. A guitar has been chosen by your child as their favorite and you want to make sure that all goes well, when he plays it in the home. With these aspirations, parents start choosing music playing areas for their child that won’t be too noisy.

When they go musical instruments shopping with their child, you know ahead of time that he has to have an amplifier to ensure that the roof does not cave in from the racket. Many fathers convert old garages into places that their children can set up their amplifiers and mikes, and play to their heart’s content. The effort might be very therapeutic for a father who had his own band when he was younger.

Buying musical instruments and shopping with your child can be a learning experience all it’s own. These trips are full of wonder, as the child gets to see for himself some of the finer instruments he can own one day, if he learns his craft well. All of the colors and multiple strings available on the guitar he wants to play so much are spread out before him in living color.

It is a hard decision for a boy to make on whether he wants an acoustic guitar or a bass guitar. As parents go musical instruments shopping with their child, they get to open a whole new world of possibilities to their child. As the child develops his talents, parents can spend time at musical concerts and let their child see what a symphony orchestra sounds like.

That night out on the town could be a good starting point to encourage a child to earn a scholarship to college where he can further his education and enjoy the fruits of his labors by becoming part of the university or college symphony orchestra. Through musical instruments shopping with your child, you can learn more about your child, and about yourself.

With each accomplishment that your child attains, it is an achievement for the parent too. A parent that encourages their children to expand their horizons gets to see life through their eyes, and shares in their experiences like they are there by their side, as they grow up at home. Parents can help children appreciate different cultures through their musical experiences.

When shopping for musical instruments with your child explore all of the devices and see which one fits your child’s personality. The musical instrument will an extension of his creative inner-self, and if the wrong instrument is forced on them, the bad choice will stand out readily at each day of practice and children will more like fail in their musical endeavors. Even if you think an instrument will be too loud and inconvenient, find a way to create an environment where they can express their thoughts through music. Letting your child learn to play music will offer far more opportunities in life, than a quiet video game machine that has the sound muted.

In my 25 years of experience as a professional music educator, I have discovered that with all of the sophisticated and profoundly worded music education philosophies there is one simple approach which I continue to draw upon year after year and student after student.

Simply said, teaching music is ENCOURAGEMENT! To encourage students to sing, play, write or perform music in order to bring them to a point of self-confidence, self-esteem, and enjoyment in music.

Encouragement also challenges those students who have confidence in their musical skills to progress forward in order to encounter new concepts, techniques and skills in their development as musicians.

Giving encourgement involves the “whole” teacher and includes (but not limited to) such things as:

A positive attitude toward teaching and the student

A good lesson plan with carefully designed objectives and goals

A safe and comfortable environment

Positive “teacher talk” (e.g. rather than saying “let’s try that again,” saying, “I would love to hear that again with. . .”)

Focusing on the student(s) as if they are the most important person(s) in the world at that moment, and that their lesson, class, or rehearsal is the most important event of the day!

Positive reinforcement. Telling the student(s) they are the “best!” (They must be the best at something, even if it is just the way they sit in a chair!)

As a teacher, I am a professional. Learning is a business in which the students are my clients. If I provide for them, they will stay with music. If I do not provide for them, they will leave music behind and a part of themselves as well. Teaching music is the business of nurturing and developing what makes a human, human.

Encouragement, I feel, is the key to providing for the student the ability to bring out the music inside them so that through their learning and experiences of music, they can be brought to a new place of meaning and purpose in the world.

The high school where I currently teach has an arts emphasis curriculum and the moto for the school is, “To be an artist is to believe in life.” Over the years I have developed my own moto for music education based on the idea of encouragement, perhaps it might encourage you to develop your own moto as to how you go about encourging your young musicians: To make a sound which cuts through the noise of the world; to strike a chord which brings into harmony the dissonance of society; to give voice to those who were once silent.

Radios, TVs, computers, and the Internet are now a normal way of life. Do you know that all information received doubles every year and a half due to the general acceleration of technology?

These days, we and our children do not need to go to the bookstores and libraries. We can easily find the book we are looking for on the Internet. Moreover, if we have no time to sit and read, we can record the audio version of the book and listen to it while driving, walking, or doing any other activity that doesn’t require much reflection. There are also video books. Certainly, these adaptable gadgets are very convenient and we should be grateful to people who invent things to make our lives easier and help us save precious time.

Our children, looking at us, try to copy the things we do. Receiving news in the “easier” version, for example from the TV, the new generation began to read less. On one hand it is normal. But if you want your child to play music without losing interest, he has to read a lot. While reading, a child increases his vocabulary and intelligence. Your imagination automatically “turns on” when you read something exciting.

Have you ever read books in which the author describes what his protagonists see around them? For example, dark-blue skies; dewdrops on a blade of grass; dense, white fog the colour of milk above the river in the early morning, etc. Some people omit such descriptive passages in books so as not to miss a string of events, action, adventure, and learn what happens next.

Every single small detail is important for our children during reading. Just after birth, a child is like a white, blank, pure sheet of paper. The person he grows up to be will depend on the information, knowledge, skills, and abilities that we, as adults, will teach and give him. Even the child’s personality and habits are literary copied from the behaviour of other people. And again, books play the huge role in this. The contents of the books are imperceptibly recorded and stored somewhere deep in human subconscious.

You might agree, but you might also wonder what this has to do with music education. I will ask you another question. Have you ever heard a piece of music that has deeply touched you? This piece can amuse you, make you pensive and even make you cry…

It happens because two very important moments coincided. First, the composer, who wrote the music, managed to convey with absolute precision not only his mood during the creation of this piece, but also a picture that he had in his mind. And second, the person, who played the piece, had these images available in a databank in his brain.

A child, who doesn’t read much, can not open and express the beauty of a musical piece only because he memorizes the notes. There is a unique, direct connection between reading and the expression of feelings.

If you pay attention to people who read a lot, you will notice that their speech is more beautiful and rich in comparison with those who don’t read much. The same is true for a child.
Music education has been included in many curricula in different nations around the globe. However, since not all students are musically-inclined, not all of them are motivated to learn music. As a result, they are no longer excited to experience formal music schooling inside their classrooms. With this conflict of interests, music teachers are then challenged or pressured on how they could make their students learn and love music at the same time.

To basically adhere to the problem, they are determined to research the latest music teachers’ resources. Since both teaching and learning are two dynamic processes, music teachers and their students should meet half way – adjusting to the kind of individuals they are.

And because they are up to music education, these music teachers need to update their lists and records with the most modern trends and techniques, which are believed to be very effective and influential with the kind of students they have right now. From time to time, there could have been new music teachers’ resources that could improve their teaching strategies as well as their way of relating to their dear students.

Today, music educators incorporate theories and application to give a well-rounded musical experience and to teach music in various perspectives intended for international understanding. To meet many demands and expectations of their students, music teachers keep on upgrading their available music teachers’ resources by doing some researches over the Internet. In just a matter of few clicks, they would be aware of what is really the latest in the music academe as well as the newest style and approach in teaching that they can utilize in their everyday instruction.

The perceived effort to enhance music teachers’ resources also results in a greater number of students, who are now more motivated and determined to learn and love music. When their music teachers use some personal touches as part of their resources – sharing their own insights, thoughts and experiences on a particular topic, the learners become more eager to attend to their music classes and listen to their classroom discussions. This happens simply because they feel that they have something to relate to and such experience could also happen to them in time.

Indeed, teaching and learning music can be both fun and enjoyable. Just like in real life and in our daily activities, when we integrate music into anything that we do, it amazingly turns out to be more special and a lot of fun. After all, music gives most of us such inspiration and motivation to look forward to something better and brighter. Love music and enjoy tomorrow.

There has been plenty of research done about the benefits of music education for young children.

1. Playing music improves concentration, memory and self-expression

One two-year study in Switzerland run with 1200 children in more than 50 classes scientifically showed how playing music improved children’s reading and verbal skills through improving concentration, memory and self-expression.(1) Younger children who had three more music classes per week and three fewer main curriculums made rapid developments in speech and learned to read with greater ease.

Other effects revealed by the study showed that children learned to like each other more, enjoyed school more (as did their teachers) and were less stressed during the various tests, indicating they were better able to handle performance pressure.

2. Playing music improves the ability to think

Ongoing research at the University of California-Irvine and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (2) demonstrate that learning and playing music builds or modifies Neural pathways related to spatial reasoning tasks, which are crucial for higher brain functions like complex maths, chess and science.

The first studies showed that listening to a Mozart sonata temporarily improved a child’s spatial abilities. Further studies compared children who had computer lessons, children who had singing lessons, children who learned music using a Keyboard and children who did nothing additional. The children who had had the Music classes scored significantly higher – up to 35% higher – than the children did Who had computer classes or did nothing additional.(3)

3. Learning music helps under-performing students to improve

Researchers at Brown University in the US (4) discovered that children aged 5-7 years who had been lagging behind in their school performance had caught up with their peers in reading and were ahead of them in math’s after seven months of music lessons. The children’s classroom attitudes and behavior ratings had also Significantly improved, and after a year of music classes were rated as better than the children who had had no additional classes.

Studies of Music Learning Benefits

Music education benefits include everything from changing a students’ mood to helping them solve math problems. In general, it helps a student become successful in the school environment. Music has immediate effects on brain activity which scientists are still studying today.

For example, a study was done that involved second graders and math. In this study, the school kids were divided into two groups. One group used newly-designed math software to augment their mathematical skills.

The other group also used this software but in addition the kids in this group received piano keyboard training. What are the results?

Both groups were tested and the second group of students scored twenty-seven percent higher on the math exam than the first group, which seem to show the positive effects of combining music teaching into other studies.

Other Studies Demonstrate The Positive Effects Of Music

Numerous studies have shown that learning and exposure to music results in improved communication between students. Fights and arguments are reduced. Also students who play in school bands are less likely to use tobacco and alcohol.

Benefits of music education also include enhancing interpersonal communication skills. This result has also been proven by some of the many studies done throughout the years.

A student who is having difficulty concentrating may find it easier when music classes has been added to the curriculum. Playing music helps a student become more self-disciplined and able to control their behavior better, because it provides an acceptable form of self expression.

If students learn to study music successfully they can use the same method to help them study in other classes. They will find it easier to understand instructions. Added benefits of music education include increasing a child’s creativity and helping him or her learn to cooperate with other students. Their social interaction skills improve after playing music together in a group.

In newborns, exposure to music is proven to help develop intelligence. Exposure to classical music helps develop reasoning and language skills in children when begun at an early age. In older children, music education helps them extend their knowledge of the world around them. Music education give children an avenue to contribute to society, which in turn helps them in life. They are more likely to become well-rounded individuals.

Conclusion

Today, no school education curriculum can be considered complete with giving students the opportunity to learn music.

Music therapy uses music to promote positive changes in the wellbeing of an individual. These positive changes may be manifested in changes in physical development, social and interpersonal development, emotional or spiritual wellbeing or cognitive abilities.

The therapeutic benefits of music have been known and harnessed since ancient times. However, music therapy in modern times dates back to the World Wars when music was used in hospitals in the rehabilitation and recovery of soldiers who had suffered physical or emotional trauma. The University of Kansas was the first University in the United States to offer a degree program in music therapy in 1944.

Early exponents of music therapy in the 1950’s to 1970’s included the French cellist Juliet Alvin and Paul Nordoff and Clive Robbins. The Nordoff-Robbins approach is still used in many countries around the world including the USA, UK, Australia, Germany and South Africa.

So, how does music therapy work?

Music is universal and connects across language barriers. Most people can respond to music in some way regardless of illness or disability.

Music has an inherent ability to generate an emotional response in the listener. It stimulates a relaxation response which can therefore lead to physiological changes in the body. Music is known to reduce stress thereby producing related benefits such as lower blood pressure, improved respiration, reduced heart rate, better cardiac performance and reduced tension in muscles.

Music is processed in both hemispheres of the brain and this stimulation has been shown to help in development of language and speech functions. It promotes socialization and development of communication, self expression and motor skills. Children and adults with autism spectrum disorder have been found to respond very positively to music and many of them display high levels of musical skill.

Music encourages verbal as well as non verbal communication and promotes social interaction and relatedness. It’s a valuable outlet for self expression and creativity. It has also been successfully used in pain management by providing a distraction from the painful stimulus as well as a means of relaxation and stress alleviation.

Children with developmental and learning difficulties, children and adults with autism spectrum disorder or special needs as well as the elderly and dementia sufferers have all been shown to benefit from music therapy. Although the benefits of music therapy have been accepted intuitively and based on anecdotal evidence it wasn’t till recently that quantitative evidence of its efficacy started to emerge.

In a recent study conducted by the University of Miami School of Medicine blood samples of a group of male Alzheimer’s patients who were treated with music therapy were found to have significantly elevated levels of melatonin, epinephrine and norepinephrine which are chemicals which act on the brain to control mood, depression, aggression and sleep. The benefits of the therapy were still evident even six weeks after cessation of the therapy and in the case of melatonin the effects persisted even longer.

Music therapy is gaining wider acceptance in the general medical community and has certainly stood the test of time. Music therapists can now be found practicing in a variety of institutions dealing with mental health, developmental and early intervention programs, correctional institutions and special education programs to name but a few. Many are having success where traditional treatment methods have failed.

Contemporary Christian music has the power to educate and inspire. Music, of the Christian variety or any other variety, has the power to inspire emotions, to transport memories in time, and to make us thankful for the blessings in our life. The truth is that there are many biblical lessons that people have learned and remember thanks to the gospel songs that they heard in their youth. Today, young and old alike are still learning and being inspired by Christian music. No matter if you prefer traditional Christian music or upbeat Christian rock, there is an artist out there who will send chills down your spine with their heartfelt lyrics.

The internet has made it possible to download a vast amount of music free of charge. There are literally millions of Christian songs in every language imaginable available online. All you have to do to find your favorite music by your favorite artists is to type a few keywords into a search box and Voila! You may find hundreds of sources for your Christian music in seconds.

The inexpensive marketing power of the internet has also made it possible for thousands of unknown artists to gain exposure. These are artists that do not have the capital and the record deal to thrust them into the limelight. These are instead artists who only have their heart, passion and talent to put into their music. And you can find all of these artists as well as popular artists online.

Unfortunately, though, much of the free music that you find online cannot be downloaded legally. It is subject to copyright, and there are stiff consequences for anyone who is caught illegally downloading and distributing music that belongs to others. If you do find music that you can download legally, it is often riddled with viruses, adware and spyware. Downloading music free of charge also poses ethical concerns for Christians who want to be sure that they only download legal music.

Thankfully, I found a site that takes away all the worries when it comes to downloading free Christian music. It features free “indie” music. This is music that is independent of the control of others, meaning that there are no record labels or producers involved. The site is not a melting pot where anyone, regardless of talent or motivation, can post their music. There are selective guidelines in place that ensure that the free music featured on the site is of the highest quality and absolutely legal.

While some of the artists are not well known, they have made it their life’s mission to produce music that inspires Christians. They may not have the backing of a record label, but they have talent and faith that can move mountains. The site can be accessed by logging onto ChristianMPFree.com.
